Podiatry is a branch of medicine focused on the diagnosis and management of foot, ankle, and lower extremity conditions. This may include skin/toenail conditions, musculoskeletal conditions (affecting bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles) or biomechanical problems. (abnormalities in the normal movement patterns of the lower limb) The podiatrist is trained on the use of diagnostic tools such as musculoskeletal ultrasound, on the interpretation of diagnostic imaging, (x-rays, MRI, CT scans) as well as on biomechanical explorations (gait analysis, for example) and other clinical diagnostic tools. The scope of practice of the podiatrist range from conservative interventions of the conditions previously mentioned, to interventional approaches like injections or surgery.
