Dr William Murrell, who also serves as Chief Science Officer for Emirates Healthcare, was invited to a regional conference on ultrasonography this month. He spoke about his work with ultrasound guided injections, primarily for platelet-rich plasma treatments and related cellular therapies.
Ultrasound Guided Injection is a relatively new technology in the orthopaedic field and has gained a lot of interest. Current literature has established that ultrasound-guided injections are far superior to “blind” injections in ensuring the accuracy of the needle placement. Dr Murrell stated that “It is so valuable to the effectiveness of the healing process to be able to have accuracy and specificity in needle placement so that the therapy reaches the place where it can make the most difference.” Diagnostic ultrasound and MRI before injection help to confirm the clinical diagnosis and establish baseline findings. Ultrasound-guided injections also allow for the use of a thinner, less painful needles which can afford more comfort to patients. These procedures do not require anaesthesia, and there is no radiation from the ultrasound machine.
