Regenerative medicine is a relatively new field that incorporates experts in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, genetics, medicine, robotics, and other fields to find solutions for healing the human body. Regenerative medicine involves the process of replacing tissue or organs that have been damaged by disease, trauma, or congenital issues using methods such as tissue engineering, cellular therapies, and medical devices and artificial organs. Combinations of these approaches can amplify the natural healing process in the body. Regenerative medicine builds on the body’s innate ability to heal and defend itself.
The primary areas of focus in Regenerative medicine include:
• Cellular therapies involve harvesting some of the many millions of adult stem cells found in every human, which are already used for self-repair, and injecting those cells into the site of diseased or damaged tissue. Reconstruction of the tissue is possible under the right circumstances. These cells can be collected from blood, fat, bone marrow, dental pulp, skeletal muscle and other sources.
• Medical devices and artificial organs can be used in cases where an organ fails. While the predominant clinical strategy has been to transplant a replacement organ from a donor, challenges regarding the availability of donor organs, and the requirement that the donor take immunosuppression drugs are prohibitive obstacles to success. Scientists and clinicians are developing and evaluating devices to supplement or to replace the function of many organ systems including the heart, lung, liver and kidney.
• Tissue engineering is a method of using biologically compatible scaffolds to implant in the body at a site where new tissue needs to be formed.

Dr. William Murrell is a consultant orthopedic surgeon American Board Certified in orthopaedic sports and regenerative medicine. Focusing on surgery of the shoulder, elbow, and knee. He is currently the Chief Science Officer for Emirates Healthcare and Chief Executive Officer for Emirates Integra Medical & Surgery Centre. An internationally renowned clinician, educator, and researcher, he frequently lectures on MSK regenerative medicine. He is also the Principal Investigator in clinical trials investigating adjuvant stem cells in the treatment of articular cartilage defect(s), the use of gold-induced cytokines for treatment of shoulder tendinopathy. He has authored several publications on musculoskeletal medicine and biological treatments.
